The summer season of 2023 saw a 15% increase in mohair offered on the auction system. This substantial increase in mohair production can be attributed to two years of good rainfall in the production area which has resulted in improved veld conditions and subsequent increase in yield per goat as well as goat numbers. In comparison with other small stock breeds, the Angora goat can realise a higher return on investment given the mohair prices of recent years which has encoraged new entrants to the industry.
An increase in supply in South Africa is extremely important for the sustainability of the industry and can contribute to price stability overs the medium to long term.
The final auction of the season comprised out 16% kid, 32% young goat and 29% adult combing mohair. There was a large quantity of seedy and stained material (20% of the offering) but the sales clearance on these were relatively low. The Brokers had firm reserves on serveral clips which resulted in a higher overall passed in rate.
