The third Cape auction of the winter season delivered a mixed, but generally positive, outcome.
Strong demand for the finer segment of the clip provided support to the market, with kid mohair
recording further gains, while young goat mohair remained firm and traded in line with previous sale
levels. In contrast, coarser adult mohair types eased, primarily as a result of the increased volume of
these categories offered to the market.

The auction took place against the backdrop of a firmer US dollar following the United States Federal
Reserve’s decision to increase its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points. The strengthening of the
dollar provides a broadly supportive environment for South African mohair exports, although global
demand remains selective and quality focused.

On the production front, the higher-than-average winter rainfall received across the Karoo has
resulted in exceptionally favourable veld conditions. Improved grazing availability has enhanced the
region’s carrying capacity during the critical kidding season and is expected to support animal health,
productivity and fibre growth. From an economic perspective, these conditions should reduce
supplementary feeding costs, improve producer profitability and contribute to the production of
high-quality fibre, thereby strengthening the medium-term outlook for the South African mohair
industry.
