The first auction of the season opened with encouraging market activity. The offering
featured a good selection of winter-grown mohair and comprised 15% kid, 33% young goat
and 31% adult combing types. Buyer participation was widespread throughout the sale,
resulting in competitive bidding, particulary for the finer end of the clip. Demand for super
kid mohair is supported by its suitability for luxury lightweight knitwear applications.
In contrast, fine adult fibre experienced downward pressure, with prices easing compared
with the closing levels of the summer season. This softer tone signals uncertainty regarding
consumption of these qualities in the Chinese domestic market with some buyers
adopting a more selective approach.
The Rand appreciated by 1.5% against a weaker US dollar
